Marshall islands: ABC provide half the story
ABC News claim to be "Australia's most trusted, independent source of news." A marketing ploy is to make a claim and repeat it. If you say something often enough people believe it, even when its false. ABC claim their news service is world class, but as we have demonstrated here time and time again this claim is a load of bollocks.
Another example is demonstrated by this ABC/Reuters report broadcast by ABC's Australia News Network. The headline reads: Climate change disturbing Pacific war graves, warns Marshall Islands minister. Like many ABC reports on climate change only half the story is reported, even the photo is misleading!
The UK's Telegraph shows how real journalists might have covered the story and includes a photo of the actual graves. Their headline:
World War Two skeletons washed from Marshall Islands graves 'by rising seas'
However, despite extensive damage to parts of the Marshall Islands' coast, researchers have begun to cast doubt on claims that the Pacific islands have already begun to disappear or that the damage is due to rises in sea levels that have occurred in recent decades. Indeed, while experts say the nation does face a long-term threat, new findings show that many of the islands are largely either remaining stable or growing.
Dr Murray Ford, from the University of Auckland, has been comparing aerial photographs of the islands taken by the United States military during World War II with photographs taken in the 1970s and in recent years. He found that many islands are getting larger and that the shrinking shoreline along coastal villages has largely been caused by commercial development, building of seawalls and land reclamation.
“It is a much more complicated story than the island being washed away,” he said.
“What the people are seeing is real – there are graves and houses falling into the water – but often it is a result of engineering and sea walls being built inappropriately. Some parts of some islands are eroding as sand has moved around but some islands are growing in size.”
A newly-published study showed a southern atoll which was devastated by a 1905 typhoon has grown back to a stable state, with its vegetated area expanding by about a quarter since 1945; other smaller islands joined together to form a single landmass.
Dr Ford said climate change is causing sea levels to rise at an increasing rate and the phenomenon poses a serious threat to the islands. But, he said, the damage that has occurred so far has been due to “inappropriate” construction, while some islands have grown due to natural accretion and endlessly shifting shorelines.
“The sea level is rising and will accelerate and on the ground the response will not be pretty,” Dr Ford said.
“But the islands have shown a wide range of change and not all of that is erosion… The story in Majuro is very much a human-driven impact on the island. In the outer islands, it is driven much more by waves, currents and movements of the sands.”
The scientists are still trying to understand the changes in the islands, which can shift shape over time periods ranging from hours to centuries and can sometimes erode during winter and grow back in the summer.
An expert on coastal changes, Professor Colin Woodroffe, from the University of Wollongong, said population increases and inhabitation of low-lying lands are probably playing a part in the increasing signs of damage.
“To say the little bit of rise has led to the erosion is too simple,” he said. “The islands are already quite vulnerable to erosion - human settlement is the most important factor.”

Trade winds slower or faster?
WUWT has an interesting post on the conflicting nature of recent climate change research:
While Matthew England claims in a new paper that fast trade winds caused cooling.
You can only sit back and weep! We made ABC's Alan Sunderland aware of the inconsistency.
While Matthew England claims in a new paper that fast trade winds caused cooling.
Once again ABC's reporters fail their readers by not mentioning the glaring contradiction given they covered the 2006 paper. One wonders where ABC's "journalists" are getting their training. Seems the ABC's Groupthink hot house is failing to imbibe a sense of scepticism necessary for sound reporting.
Here's ABC's latest report:
Warming slowdown caused by Pacific winds
Warming slowdown caused by Pacific winds
The research, published in Nature Climate Change, shows more than 20 years of strengthening trade winds has increased the circulation of water in the western Pacific Ocean.
Back in 2006
Global warming may weaken Pacific current

The vast looping system of air currents that fuels Pacific trade winds and climate from South America to Southeast Asia may be another victim of climate change, scientists say

Some wobbly numbers
ABC report: Jellyfish numbers on the rise, expert says.
Seems Three people in Queensland have been stung by the irukandji jellyfish since New Year's Eve.
"Dr Gershwin says there have been huge, unexplained jellyfish blooms across the country. "It tends to be things like over fishing, climate change pollution too much fertiliser and too much sewage in the coastal waters," she said." (or perhaps periodic global fluctuations are to blame?-see below).
Meanwhile back in 1953: SIX PERSONS STUNG BY MARINE OBJECTS AT WEEK-END
"The cause has not been isolated but the sting has been named lrukandji, after an aboriginal tribe which originally inhabited the area between Trinity Inlet and the Mowbray River."
Cronulla, March 1939: Many Rescues in Surf
"Lifesavers effected many rescues in big seas on metropolitan beaches yesterday. Their task was made more hazardous by the invasion of armies of"blue-bottles" and jelly-fish."
Also in 1939 Britain invaded, not by Germans by Jelly Fish!: BRITAIN INVADED-BY JELLYFISH.
"Great Britain is being Invaded by a plague of millions of jellyfish, causing fishermen to stay in port, swimmers to swim inshore, and giving' marine scientists a headache."
The Jelly fish so common in 1936 it even rained jelly fish..."During a shower of rain at Frankston, near Melbourne, clouds, of little brownish creatures fell from the sky and covered the streets. The little creatures were jellyfish, about half an inch long and a quarter of an inch wide."
In 1937 they even caused a blackout! JELLYFISH CAUSE BLACKOUT IN BRISBANE. You'd have thought someone might have done something about it seeing it happened in 1931! Jellyfish Stop Generator. Some lessons never learnt (at which point some recent flooding comes to mind).
And in 1907 these FISHERMEN'S ENEMIES arrived in Portland Bill (UK) in "Plague" proportions. Perhaps descendents of the great Scrabster bay plague of 1886?
In 2012 ABC report three people being stung. In 1952 it was: "a daily average of 10 sufferers."

"Nine cases of jelly fish stings kept lifesaver first-aid groups busy at Yorkey's Knob yesterday and several other bathers were treated for minor cuts. One jelly fish sting victim, a seven-year-old girl, was taken to hospital."
Sharks also a nuisance but it seems friendly flipper chased them away:
"The water was again cleared later in the- afternoon for a short period when a shark came within 30yards of the beach. Two porpoises chased it out to sea."
Back in 1934 Jelly Fish (not the irukandji) invaded Port Phillip Bay in: "such vast numbers as seriously to inconvenience bathers. Two years ago nets were used in beach bathing pools on Melbourne beaches to clear the water." Look out Melbourne for its seems "the invasion occurs", "Nearly ever year about the middle of February"!

Blubberous jelly invasion at Newcastle in 1932:
"A jelly fish invasion on a scale unprecedented in the history of Newcastle beach made surfing practically impossible after mid-day on Friday. Lunchtime surfers walked down to the water's edge, watched the glistening mass of blubber, which littered the beach, and went back to the pavilion to have a shower."

Jellyfish population booming worldwide; or is it?
Study: No Evidence Of Increasing Jellyfish Population Over Last Two Centuries
Jellyfish population booming worldwide; or is it?
Study: No Evidence Of Increasing Jellyfish Population Over Last Two Centuries
In regard to the cause, seems some experts agree it is due to something other than "over fishing, climate change pollution too much fertiliser and too much sewage" : Jellyfish experts show increased blooms are a consequence of periodic global fluctuations.
The key finding of the study shows global jellyfish populations undergo concurrent fluctuations with successive decadal periods of rise and fall, including a rising phase in the 1990s and early 2000s that has contributed to the current perception of a global increase in jellyfish abundance. The previous period of high jellyfish numbers during the 1970s went unnoticed due to limited research on jellyfish at the time, less awareness of global-scale problems and a lower capacity for information sharing (e.g. no Internet).

Mildura Fire Risk - Not Hot off the press, not hotter, not drier
Updated below with a comparison of Mean days above 40 degrees for Mildura. Guess which era is higher?
Must be a slow news day. ABC report today under the somewhat startling headline "Study reveals 'increasing' Mildura fire risk" news of a study that was apparently first published online in April this year (see below). It seems this news is only half a year late, but as it's a "scary" climate change story I guess it's always worthwhile for ABC's activist reporters to get that scary catastrophist climate climate message out; no matter how old! I say apparently because thanks to ABC's extraordinarily "high" reporting standards no where in its brief report does the ABC name the study's title or apparently its authors. It does however have a scary quote from climate alarmist David Karoly. This appears to take the results of the study out of context, for the last line of the abstract of the study reads: "Although these trends are consistent with projected impacts of climate change on FFDI, this study cannot separate the influence of climate change, if any, with that of natural variability. "
In the article Karoly is reported saying: "It gets more extreme in Mildura, and I mean most people in Mildura know that yes it's been getting hotter, it's also been getting drier," he said.
This is used to suggest that there is an increase in risk. And that might be the case if you only look at recent data. If you take a longer view and the data is there for all to see. It seems a different story emerges.

So Hotter and Drier???
Hotter? Here's a compilation of Max temp data from the BOM website based on stations 76077 and 76031 extending from 1910 to 2010, they are combined at the same scale (there does not appear to be a continuously monitored site). 76077 is the post office, 76031 is at the airport about 15 km away). Note that the Max temperature for the period 1910-1940 (red) is higher than 1950-2010. So David, no it's actually not hotter over the long term! It seems that it was hotter overall, earlier last century.
Drier? The figure below is a compilation of rainfall from the same stations. Not that hard to spot the gap between the two, but if you look closely (you might have to click on the figure to enlarge) the mean over the period 1910-1940 (red line -266.6mm) is well below the mean over the period 1950-2010-293.1mm), so no David, not actually drier either, in fact overall, things were drier earlier last century.
The actual figures?: (updated to show figures from 1910)
Mean Rainfall station 76031 1946-2011: 293.1mm
Thanks to ABC's poor reporting we assume (and prepare to wear egg on our face) that this is the paper in question, not that it changes the issues with Karoly's alarmist take on the weather:

Hotter? From BOM

(Note Mean Max Temp 1910-1949: 24.1 degrees C)
(Note Mean Max Temp 1910-1949: 24.1 degrees C)
Mean Max temp station 76031 1946-2011: 23.8 degrees C
Mean Min temp station 76077 1889-1949: 10.4 degrees C
(Note Mean Max Temp 1910-1949: 10.5 degrees C)
(Note Mean Max Temp 1910-1949: 10.5 degrees C)
Mean Min temp station 76031 1946-2011: 10.3 degrees C
Why 1910? according to BOM "Temperature data prior to 1910 should be used with extreme caution as many stations prior to that date used non-standard shelters." That is many sttaions were not yet equiped with the Stevenson Screens that would become standard. Reports from the Adelaide Register in the NLA's newspaper archive suggests a Stevenson Screen was at the Mildura PO in at least 17 January 1907.

So given the climate was hotter and drier earlier last century I guess with respect to bushfires it was also riskier! So the elevator report actually is: Risk of bushfires in Mildura may return to levels last seen early last century!
Update: Here's a comparison thanks to BOM of days over 40 degrees between the Post Office site (76077-1889-1949) and the airport (76031-1946-2011). Once again when looking at long term trends the earlier data shows considerably more extreme weather:

Abstract
A data set of observed fire weather in Australia from 1973–2010 is analysed for trends using the McArthur Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI). Annual cumulative FFDI, which integrates daily fire weather across the year, increased significantly at 16 of 38 stations. Annual 90th percentile FFDI increased significantly at 24 stations over the same period. None of the stations examined recorded a significant decrease in FFDI. There is an overall bias in the number of significant increases towards the southeast of the continent, while the largest trends occur in the interior of the continent and the smallest occur near the coast. The largest increases in seasonal FFDI occurred during spring and autumn, although with different spatial patterns, while summer recorded the fewest significant trends. These trends suggest increased fire weather conditions at many locations across Australia, due to both increased magnitude of FFDI and a lengthened fire season. Although these trends are consistent with projected impacts of climate change on FFDI, this study cannot separate the influence of climate change, if any, with that of natural variability.

Update: ABC happy with mediocre methane report
COMMENT: ABC have replied to our complaint about poor reporting "Methane report under inflated - a lesson in science reporting from the NYT".
Based on ABC's response (below) it appears ABC is happy to provide mediocre news reporting! Again compare the quality of the following reports about methane leaks from the Arctic Ocean, and ask yourself if ABC deserves to call itself "Australia's most trusted, independent source of news." We sure are getting our 2 cents worth.

Methane report under inflated - a lesson in science reporting from the NYT
Update 5/4/2010: ABC response posted below
ABC HEADLINE: "Scientists discover huge seabed methane leak", ABC News Online 5 March 2010.
ABC REPORTED: An uncredited article that reports:
Scientists have discovered the Arctic ocean seabed is leaking huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere.
Which news agency do you think fairly represents the findings: the ABC or NYT?
For comparison try this article from Science News http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/56937/title/Arctic_seafloor_a_big_source_of_methane
THE COMPLAINT: The ABC claims to be Australia's most trusted, independent source of news. Based on a comparison of these two reports apparently it cannot claim to provide the highest quality news service. Rather than the brief sketch provided which misrepresents the findings of the paper, can the ABC amend the article to provide a better representation if its contents, or perhaps provide the NYT article instead. Perhaps the reporter can start by reading the original paper. It can be found here:http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/327/5970/1246
OUTCOME: Thank you for your email regarding the ABC News online report Scientists discover huge seabed methane leak.
Your concerns have been investigated by Audience and Consumer Affairs, a unit which is separate to and independent of program making areas within the ABC. We have reviewed the report, assessed it against the ABC’s editorial standards and sought and considered material provided by ABC News.
Audience and Consumer Affairs is satisfied that the report is accurate and in keeping with section 5 of the ABC Editorial Policies, which are available online at the attached link; http://abc.net.au/corp/pubs/ edpols.htm The comments of a localexpert were included to provide context for the ABC’s audience.
It is important to note that Audience and Consumer Affairs does not review news coverage of other organisations. It reviews ABC content only, as explained above. Your interest in the NYT’s coverage of this issue is noted.
COMMENT: Little difference between getting poor quality news and no news at all. Perhaps we don't need the ABC after all? I found the better report for free on the Internet.
