ABC HEADLINE: "Butterflies 'fly early as planet warms'" ABC Science online 17/3/2010, and related reports on News Online: "Climate change link to butterflies" , The World Today: "Early butterflies linked to climate change"
ABC REPORTED: ABC provided extensive coverage on a new article in Biology Letters that claims that Early emergence in a butterfly causally linked to anthropogenic warming, namely increases in greenhouse gases.
COMMENT: We'll reserve judgement on this one but would anticipate that the ABC would provide similar coverage to any study that demonstrates the article is wrong. Now that would only be fair and balanced, wouldn't it?
One of the articles states, "This is the first time we've been able to link the change in a natural system, like a butterfly, to regional warming and then link that regional warming to increase in green house gases as a result of human activity."
ReplyDeleteIt is not clear from the actual scientific data what percentage of the 1 degree warming is caused by humans. The earth has not warmed over the last decade, a decade in which humans have pumped record amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. The anticipated correlation of temperature rise and human produced CO2 has not been observed. Cause and effect is fundamental principle of science. If the theory is that increased CO2 is the MAIN cause warming we should see the temperature go up damn it! So, the quote above does not pass the 'smell test', I am afraid.
