A modest contribution to the IPCC

The IPCC have finally go around to listing corrections made to AR4, Working Group II Table 10.2. While we take credit for the corrections and the lines added to the errata (see below), it could not have happened without the lack of inquiry and curiosity shown by ABC News.

Replace "0.09°C per year in the Himalayas and 0.04°C in Teral region, more in winter" with "For 1977-94: 0.090°C per year in Trans-Himalaya and 0.057°C per year in the Himalaya, more in winter; 0.041°C per year in Terai region". Add "Shrestha et al., 1999" to References column.

Missing News: Russian heatwave due to natural factors

ABC were quick to attribute the Russian Heatwave in 2010 to increases in greenhouse gases. However Roger Pielke Jnr reports on a new paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters (PDF) that finds otherwise:
The paper concludes:

Our analysis points to a primarily natural cause for the Russian heat wave. This event appears to be mainly due to internal atmospheric dynamical processes that produced and maintained an  intense and long-lived blocking event. Results from prior studies suggest that it is likely that the intensity of the heat wave was further increased by regional land surface feedbacks. The absence of long-term trends in regional mean temperatures and variability together with the model results indicate that it is very unlikely that warming attributable to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations contributed substantially to the magnitude of this heat wave.

4 corners versus Topher

ABC's current affairs flagship the good ship "4 Corners" is looking at the Murray-Darling Basin in tonight's edition. With the Government promising to put a decision before Parliament in 12 months time, they must decide who gets the water and just how much. A pain-free solution is unlikely, so will the politicians have the ticker to make the tough decisions? Will the largest water reform plan in the nation's history deliver a healthy river system, or will it be stymied by political compromise?
