Missing News: An Inconvenient Deception: How Al Gore Distorts Climate Science and Energy Policy

ABC recently provided free marketing and uncritical coverage of Al Gore's latest alarmist tome. See for instance:

Dr Roy Spencer the scientist responsible for developing and interpreting the NASA satellite measurements of global temperature has released an ebook available on Amazon that provides the critical coverage ABC's unquestioning reporters missed out on. The book is titled "An Inconvenient Deception: How Al Gore Distorts Climate Science and Energy Policy". Sadly somehow we doubt it will feature on the ABC.

Al Gore's new movie An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is reviewed for its accuracy in climate science and energy policy. As was the case with Gore's first movie (An Inconvenient Truth), the movie is bursting with bad science, bad policy and some outright falsehoods. The storm events Gore addresses occur naturally, and there is little or no evidence they are being made worse from human activities: sea level is rising at the same rate it was before humans started burning fossil fuels; in Miami Beach the natural rise is magnified because buildings and streets were constructed on reclaimed swampland that has been sinking; the 9/11 memorial was not flooded by sea level rise from melting ice sheets, but a storm surge at high tide, which would have happened anyway and was not predicted by Gore in his first movie, as he claims; the Greenland ice sheet undergoes melt every summer, which was large in 2012 but then unusually weak in 2017; glaciers advance and retreat naturally, as evidenced by 1,000 to 2,000 year old tree stumps being uncovered in Alaska; rain gauge measurements reveal the conflict in Syria was not caused by reduced rainfall hurting farming there, and in fact the Middle East is greening from increasing CO2 in the atmosphere; agricultural yields in China have been rising, not falling as claimed by Gore. The renewable energy sources touted by Gore (wind and solar), while a laudable goal for our future, are currently very expensive: their federal subsidies per kilowatt-hour of energy produced are huge compared to coal, natural gas, and nuclear power. These costs are hidden from the public in increased federal and state tax rates. Gore is correct that "it is right to save humanity", but what we might need saving from the most are bad decisions that reduce prosperity and hurt the poor.

Missing NEWS: 25 years of satellite temperature monitoring

AS ABC are unable to look outside their groupthink culture on climate change we just thought you'd like to know that its been 25 years since Roy Spencer and John Christie started monitoring global temperatures by satellite.
The graph below a nice summary of their findings.

A chart put together by John Christy, director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, that reflects how the temperature satellite data (the green line) contrasts with temperature models SOURCE

A recent interview with Roy and John to mark the occasion appears HERE. It won't be on the ABC.

Missing Voices: Roy Spencer

ABC gathers its information from a very  limited number of sources.  Despite a call for diversity in its charter its staff favour those with a similar viewpoint to their own regardless of the subject. On Climate Change for years this has meant the only "experts" ABC call upon for comment and opinion share the same Alarmist views on humanity's influence on the climate as the ABC's staff.

One of the voices the ABC could have have broadcast belongs to Dr Roy Spencer, a climate scientist from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Dr Spencer looks after the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on NASA’s Aqua satellite, one of the key instruments monitoring global temperatures. A voice perhaps worth listening to. However a search of ABC's news archive could locate only one interview with Dr Spencer. Perhaps with the climate crisis becoming increasingly "Lukewarm" it's time for another.

Dr Spencer an important voice missing from your ABC.
Here's a link to his blog. http://www.drroyspencer.com

Missing News: Climate models wrong

Quick item of missing News (via Roger Pielke Snr):There is a new paper published which raises further questions on the robustness of multi-decadal global climate predictions. It is:
Spencer, R.W.; Braswell, W.D. On the Misdiagnosis of Surface Temperature Feedbacks from Variations in Earth’s Radiant Energy Balance. Remote Sens.2011, 3, 1603-1613.
The University of Alabama has issues a news release on it which reads:
Climate models get energy balance wrong, make too hot forecasts of global warming
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (July 26, 2011) — Data from NASA’s Terra satellite shows that when the climate warms, Earth’s atmosphere is apparently more efficient at releasing energy to space than models used to forecast climate change have been programmed to “believe.”
The result is climate forecasts that are warming substantially faster than the atmosphere, says Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist in the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Read the rest at Roger's Blog

Missing News - Study falsifies IPCC: Climate has low sensitivity to CO2

MISSING HEADLINE: "Spencer wins Nobel Prize: Climate has low sensitivity to CO2", or perhaps "Lone scientist trumps IPCC: Wins Nobel Prize"
ABC DID NOT REPORT: Dr Roy Spencer provides a brief summary of his recent work that demonstrates the climate has a low sensitivity to CO2, contrary to claims made by the IPCC. To top it off Dr Spencer shows how variation in cloud cover due to changes in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation can account for 75% of global warming since the 1880s. The implication is that there is no man made climate crisis!
Roy Spencer's work is summarised in his recent book The Great Global Warming Blunder based on a number of peer reviewed papers, the most recent  of which is:
Spencer, R. W., and W. D. Braswell "On the Diagnosis of Radiative Feedback in the Presence of Unknown Radiative Forcing J. Geophys. Res., doi:10.1029/2009JD013371, in press. (accepted 12 April 2010)

THE COMPLAINT:  Climate modeler and IPCC author Prof. Andy Pitman has stated: "There is a Nobel Prize awaiting Carter [ed. that's Prof Bob Carter], or other skeptics, for that paper that buries global warming. There is world-wide acclaim, there is that Chair at Cambridge and the thanks of governments the world over. My question is why none of them have published this evidence - but of course the question is rhetorical ... because while every decent climate scientist looks for flaws in the data, the models and the theory we have not been able to find any ..." (click HERE for the full "conversation").

Seems that Dr Roy Spencer has found that evidence. Time to hand that Nobel Prize over, Andy!

We remain mystified as to how the ABC have missed reporting this significant development in climate science, one of such significance it could merit a Nobel Prize. The only reason appears to be bias against any evidence contrary to ABC's alarmist view on climate change. Please provide coverage of Dr Spencer's recent work.
OUTCOME: Pending
COMMENT:  I guess good news (ie. that there is no climate crisis) doesn't qualify as news at ABC.

The Great Global Warming Blunder

COMMENT: Dr Roy Spencer explores climate sensitivity in his new book The Great Global Warming Blunder.
We have requested ABC find time to interview Dr Spencer about his new work and the notion contained therein that the climate's sensitivity to increased CO2 is not as high as flawed IPCC climate models suggest. Come on, surprise us!

From Dr Spencer's Blog (HERE):

"About one-half of Blunder is a non-technical description of our new peer reviewed and soon-to-be-published research which supports the opinion that a majority of Americans already hold: that warming in recent decades is mostly due to a natural cycle in the climate system — not to an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning.

Believe it or not, this potential natural explanation for recent warming has never been seriously researched by climate scientists. The main reason they have ignored this possibility is that they cannot think of what might have caused it.
You see, climate researchers are rather myopic. They think that the only way for global-average temperatures to change is for the climate system to be forced ‘externally’…by a change in the output of the sun, or by a large volcanic eruption. These are events which occur external to the normal, internal operation of the climate system."
